In the most recent express entry draw of 2023, which was released on September 26, 2023, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sent invitations to apply to eligible candidates who were waiting in the express entry pool.
The latest Express Entry draw was the fifth in a row to target healthcare occupations. Candidates with Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score between 350 and 462 were invited to apply for permanent residence.
The healthcare sector draw is the category-based selection that was anticipated after the announcement of IRCC. This came after the first-ever category-based draw on June 28, in which ITAs were given out to 500 healthcare employees with a minimum CRS of 476.

Why Healthcare is a Human Capital Priorities stream?
Healthcare is one of the industries with a severe labor shortage, partly due to Canada’s ageing population and one of the lowest birth rates in the world. For example, it is projected that nine million Canadians will reach retirement age (65) in the next seven years.
As of March 2023, the healthcare and social support field has the most job openings with 144,500 positions available, comprising 17.7% of all available jobs based on the latest data from Statistics Canada.
Various provinces and territories have established streams under the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) to conduct draws for healthcare professionals.
As an example, British Columbia conducts draws for healthcare professionals in nearly every BC PNP draw, Ontario recently welcomed 318 foreign workers in a healthcare occupation, and Alberta has just launched a Designated Healthcare Pathway under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program.
