TEST DEVALUATION DE FRANCAIS: TEF CANADA EXAM
TEF stands for Test d’évaluation de français. The TEF Canada Exam is designed to assess a candidate’s French skills on a scale of 7 levels, ranging from 0+ (basic skills) to level 6 (complete control). A certificate of results is issued to the applicant, which shows the applicant’s scores on each section of the test and is valid for one year.
TEF language proficiency tests are required when applying for permanent residency or a work visa in Canada’s French-speaking provision.
WHAT IS THE TEF CANADA EXAM?
If you want to apply for Canadian citizenship, you must take the TEF (Test d’Evaluation du Français) exam because the results are verified and accepted in Canada. An international benchmark test for French abilities, the TEF measures how well a person knows and uses French. This course was developed in 1998 by the French Language Center of the CCI Paris Ile-de-France.
- During economic immigration programs requiring proof of language skills, the TEF Canada Exam is mandatory at the request of Canadian Citizenship and Immigration.
- The TEF Canada is also required as proof of French language proficiency when applying for Canadian permanent residency.

For immigration to Canada, the candidates must take all four sections (2 hours and 55 minutes)
- Reading Comprehension – 50 questions – 300 points
- Listening Comprehension – 60 questions – 360 points
- Written Expression – 2 topics – 450 points
- Oral Expression – 2 topics – 450 points
As a result, results for the four skills listed above are expected by Immigration Canada (CIC- Canadian Federal Government). The minimum CLB (Canadian language benchmark) required is level 7 (Common European Framework of Languages level B2).
A candidate for Canadian citizenship must complete the following two sections (55 minutes):
- Listening Comprehension – 60 questions – 360 points
- Oral Expression – 2 topics – 450 points

TEF CANADA EXAM SYLLABUS
The speaking module evaluates candidates’ communication and French language proficiency.
- Section A of the test consists of gathering information, and Section B consists of conversing with someone.
- The writing module evaluates the ability to express oneself in writing. Section A requires you to write articles, whereas Section B requires you to express yourself in writing.
Candidates will be required to listen to and comprehend French audio clips in the listening module.
- The reading module will assess a candidate’s ability to read, evaluate, and comprehend written materials.
- The questions are asked in MCQ formats.
Vocabulary and syntax are used to assess a candidate’s ability to use proper punctuation and grammar. The paper is made up of multiple-choice questions. The topics covered in the TEF Canada exam are detailed in the table below.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE TEF CANADA EXAM?
TEF Exam is approved and accepted by the Ministère de l’Immigration et des Communautés Culturelles du Québec (MICC) as an official language proficiency test for applying for permanent residency. To improve their performance in language proficiency tests, applicants can enroll in TEF Coaching. Two different versions of the test are offered:
