The immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has been keen on inviting skilled and unskilled labor for permanent residency in Canada. Canada’s immigration minister, Sean Fraser, has been vocal about the need for labor in Canada following a labor shortage in canada. The current aim of the Canadian government is to increase the workforce in targeted occupations and areas as per the occupation in demand list. THE NEW EXPRESS ENTRY CATEGORIES
Candidates who have a strong French language proficiency and are practicing an occupation in demand as per the recent express entry changes, will be given preference.
The new categories are –
- French language proficiency
- Healthcare
- Science, technology, engineering, mathematics – STEM professionals
- Trade occupations
- Transport occupations
- Agriculture and agri food occupation
The aim of introducing these new categories is to increase the number of French speaking in demand occupation professions outside of quebec.
TEER 1,2 and 3 are invited under this new change.
WHY INTRODUCE NEW EXPRESS ENTRY CATEGORIES?
These new categories are supposed to fill vacant positions in in demand occupations throughout canada.
Immigration is a bilateral tie through which both the country and the person can benefit, while people migrate to canada due to economic purposes, the country also considers them valuable assets who contribute to the development and economy of the country.
These changes help the officers to select the most eligible candidate as per the requirement of the country.
WHAT IS EXPRESS ENTRY?
Established in 2015, express entry seeks to cater to the changing economic and labor market needs of canada. It is one of the most successful and utilized ways of applying for Canada permanent residency.
Permanent residency in Canada through express entry is dependent on the points one accumulates on the Comprehensive ranking system (CRS).
The points are awarded on these basis
- Age
- Qualifications
- English ability
- French ability
- Work experience
Under Express Entry, three streams have been introduced for skilled workers and those specializing in a trade as per the occupation demand list.
If their trade and skill are a part of the in demand occupation list, then they can apply through the following programs.
- Federal skilled worker program
Federal skilled worker program is for people who have a year of work experience in a foreign nation. Their education degrees need to be accredited as per the guidelines of ECA, educational credential assessment.
- Federal skilled trades program
This program is for those who are skilled in at least one of the things as mentioned in canada occupation demand list. If they are skilled in a particular branch of an occupation or an occupation and have significant experience. Then, they are eligible to apply under the Federal skilled trades programme.
- Canada experience class
The canadian experience class is for skilled workers who have work experience in canada, in the form of temporary work visas, and now wish to apply for permanent residency. The person must have 12 months of work experience in canada.
Invitation to apply for those who are selected under the new category system of express entry will be sent in the following months until fall.

CANADA OCCUPATION DEMAND LIST AND NATIONAL OCCUPATION CLASSIFICATION – what are they?
The canada occupation demand list states the list of occupations in demand in canada as a whole. The occupation demand list targets the main occupations that are of particular value and importance across the country.
The occupations are classified and given codes for easy identification. The classification of occupations comes under the national occupation classification and the occupations that do not have a code are not held eligible in the country.
TEER LEVELS UNDER NATIONAL OCCUPATION CLASSIFICATION
There are different TEER levels that rate professions as per the
- Training
- Education
- Experience
- responsibilities
Required by that profession.
There are 6 Teer levels, as follow
TEER 0 – Managerial roles
TEER 1 – Compulsory university degree
TEER 2 – College education or 2 years’ of training
TEER 3 – College diploma, or less than 2 years’ training
TEER 4 – High school education and on the job training
TEER 5 – No formal education required
Under the changes in express entry as indicated by the immigration refugees and citizenship canada, only TEER 0,1,2,3 are invited.
